Baroque Rome
The itinerary starts from Santa Bibiana, at number 154 on Via Giolitti, at 150 meters from Caracciolo. An ancient Paleochristian church, it was transformed at the turn of the 17th century in Baroque style by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the outstanding architect and sculptor, who preserved the original 13th-century plan and added the apse and the two lateral chapels. The statue of the Saint in the altarpiece is truly beautiful, both done by Bernini, and the splendid frescoes on the left wall of the apse are by another Baroque master, the painter Pietro da Cortona.
From here get to the historic center by taking bus number 70 and get off on Via Nazionale. Continue on via del Quirinale, and at the left corner of via delle Quattro Fontane, you will find the Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains, a jewel of Baroque architecture, the work of yet another great architect: Francesco Borromini. A little further, on the left side of Via del Quirinale is the Church dedicated to Sant’Andrea, a work by Bernini. From here backtrack a bit and go left on Via delle Quattro Fontane to Piazza Barberini home to the lovely Triton Fountain by Bernini. From here head off to Piazza Navona, taking Via del Caravita to see the illusionistic vault painted by Andrea Pozzi in the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola. Piazza Navona is gorgeous, Bernini and Borromini squared off, one with the Fontana dei Fiumi, and the other with the Church of Sant’Agnese .

Ancient Rome
The itinerary starts with the Temple of Minerva Medica, a huge nymphaeum dating from the 4th century A.D. and located at number 100 on Via Giolitti, at 200 meters from Hotel Caracciolo. It has an imposing size and is an example of late ancient architecture, a precursor of the techniques used in the building of Byzantine basilicas with central layout. With bus 70, go to Piazza Venezia where the Colonna Traiana stands, a masterpiece of Roman sculpture.
From here starts the Via dei Fori Imperiali, an amazing scenario of unequaled charm, flanked on the left by the Foro di Augusto and the Foro di Nerva, and soon after, on your right, by the unmistakable and grandiose "Colonnacce", the imposing vestiges of the Basilica of Massenzio (or of Constantine). A little further up, can be seen the outline of the ultimate symbol of eternal Rome: the Amphitheater of Flavio, renamed in the Middle Ages Coliseum, for its majestic size.
