Piazza della Repubblica

In just a few minutes’ walk from Hotel Caracciolo, you can visit the first historical place encountered by all those who come out from Termini Station, Piazza della Repubblica.

This Piazza, one most historical in Rome, was known as Piazza Esedra until the 1950s, due to the fact that it covers the exedra-theatre of the ancient Baths of Diocletian, which are  still located just opposite it today.

Two works of great interest can be seen in the piazza, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, created from a wing of the Imperial Roman baths, and the Fountain of the Naiads (the nymphs that protect rivers, lakes, oceans and underground waters) created by Mario Rutelli, the sculptor from Palermo, in 1901.

This place is also famous for the majestic porticoed buildings built at the end of the 19th century by Gaetano Koch.

Piazza della Repubblica is well known to the international jet-set because previews of the most famous films are screened here, followed by glamorous gala evenings featuring stars from the world of cinema.

It is also worth remembering that this is the start of Via Nazionale, one of the most important streets in the city.
