The Pontifical Lateran University
The Pontifical Lateran University was founded by Pope Clement XIV, who entrusted the faculties of sacred theology and philosophy of the Roman College to the clergy of Rome in 1773. In 1981, John Paul II established the Pontifical Institute for Studies on the Marriage and the Family in the University, which has the right to grant iure proprio academic degrees.
The university currently has four faculties: Theology, Canon Law, Civil Law, Philosophy, and three institutes: The Pontifical Institute Utriusque Iuris, the Pontifical Pastoral Institute Redemptor Hominis and the Institute for Marriage and the Family.
The research areas promote and conduct research, conferences, publications, seminars and courses, and adopt all initiatives considered necessary for purposes of scientific research and informing public opinion worldwide.
