Tour of Ostia Antica: Ostia Antica, from the Latin ostium (“mouth”), was founded, according to archaeologists, between the late-fifth and early-fourth centuries B.C., reputedly by the legendary King Ancus Marcius. It was a naval military base, which then became the most important port for supplying grain to Rome. Starting from Porta Romana and passing along the main street, the Decumanus Maximus, we will visit the ancient metropolis and Piazzale della Vittoria. We will then view the Baths of Neptune, one of the city's public services, built by Hadrian and decorated with beautiful mosaics. Behind the complex are the Firemen’s Barracks, also from the era of Hadrian. The tour will proceed towards the theatre, built by Agrippa in the first century A.D. From the top of the steps there is a great view of the excavations. After having visited the House of Diana, we will arrive at the centre of Ostia, where we can see the Forum, Ostia’s political centre, the Temple of Rome and Augustus and, finally, the baths. The excursion will conclude with a visit to the Judiciary Basilica, a large, rectangular hall surrounded by a portico built by Domitian or Trajan, to the right of which is the Round Temple from the third century B.C.
